Marais Salant Ecomuseum

Located in Loix, on the exceptional site of the capture of the Lasse, the Ecomusée du Marais Salant offers you the opportunity to discover the Réthais salt marshes all year round.

The first salt marshes appeared in the 12th century, created by monks, but the activity only took off from the 15th century. The first half of the 19th century saw the peak of salt production, which reached more than 30,000 tonnes per year. After a long period of decline, the 2000s saw the arrival of young producers rehabilitating abandoned marshes.

The Ecomuseum of the Marais Salant traces the history of the Rhaï salt marshes and illustrates the work of the salt workers and their ancestral gestures.

After visiting the exhibition, a guide will explain to you, around a model, how the salt marsh works, then will accompany you to the site.

There you will discover, depending on the season, the preparation of the marshes, the harvesting of salt…but also the specific flora and fauna of the Rhaïs marshes.
